While it is now an evident fact that the social diffusion of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) systems has triggered a cognitive revolution, this phenomenon is still too recent, too rapid and too radical in its novelty to allow us to make reliable predictions about its social consequences, particularly in the world of work.
Remembering what has happened so far with the so-called “industrial revolutions”, which were in effect social revolutions induced by technological changes, it is nevertheless plausible that GenAI will create great opportunities but also great risks, many of which have direct implications on society and on the world of work. The progressive diffusion of GenAI systems in fact increases the cognitive and operational capabilities of individuals and organizations, which however generally have limited control over the behavior of these systems, which depends on the methods and data with which they are trained, currently under the control of a relatively limited number of subjects. If it is still early to make reliable predictions, it is not too early to share experiences and opinions gained in the meantime, to offer a contribution to the design of appropriate social policies, to maximize the opportunities and minimize the risks generated by GenAI.
