Main topic of the conference:

“From the Economics of Power to the Economics of Democracy” focuses on the comparison of an economic policy inspired by republican Constitutions born after the tragedy of World War II and the impact of economic decisions urged or imposed by global multinational corporations. We live in times when this juxtaposition becomes increasingly evident, so much so that the term “Plutonomy,” an economic model in which economic growth is driven and predominantly consumed by a small elite of very wealthy individuals, was coined by Citigroup analysts in 2005-2006. It theorizes how the behavior of the wealthy overrides that of the average consumer, disproportionately influencing economic dynamics. Analysts predicted that this trend would continue because of the support of “capitalist-friendly” governments and favorable tax regimes. In other words, Plutonomy represents an economic system dominated by a narrow elite of the wealthy who, through global corporations, influence the global economy. This model raises serious issues of social justice, a-democracy, political stability and growing inequality, contrary to the founding inspiration of the social compact represented by the Constitutions of post-war Europe.
