The definitive project of the “Variation of Section D” is almost 9 km long. It begins shortly after the interconnection junction with the A51 eastern ring road, north of Vimercate, as a continuation of Section C, and then continues eastwards. After crossing the Molgora river, the route bends in a southerly direction, reaching the existing interconnection between the A4 highway and the external eastern ring road between the municipalities of Agrate and Caponago.
The Pedemontana Lombarda highway, the final project of which was approved in 2009, was conceived in the 1970s and the route was designed in the foothills, as can be seen in the map, referring to the 1985 route; November 1986 the company Autostrada Pedemontana Lombarda SpA was established for the east-west connection of the upper Po Valley, from the province of Varese to that of Bergamo, as part of the pan-European corridor V “Lisbon-Kiev”. At the beginning of the 2000s, the route was designed much further south and then expected a cost of over 4.5 billion euros in project financing, of which less than a third was borne by public finances. The “Pedemontana Lombarda Section D-Short” is a modification to the original project of section D and was proposed in 2022.
